Lives I’d never lead

For the way I remember it

Lives I’d never lead

Dazed in a hazy afternoon dream

I drifted through the sun

to a sign called oasis

doors held by my hands

opened to a waiting refrigerated world

sweat dripped down my cooling skin

before I was on fire again

burning in the light of a cherry

glowing next to red pouty lips

I saw lives I would never lead

reflected in the dark glasses

covering the windows to her soul

love was in the bourbon and rye

I sipped to her

nights we’d never have played

in the rhythms of the ashes

she flicked inside an ashtray

I danced a dance of

almost crossing rooms

her feet tapped in her heels

her hips swayed against the fabric

of her dress

with a voice as sweet as honeybee honey

she sang along with jukebox songs

every note taking me deeper into

the black hole wanting her was

sending me down

every movement she made, made my

race car heart careen out of control

my thoughts played detective

with the mystery of her name

her Cigarette finished she stood

holding every eye in a trance

lines of grey smoke circled in her hair

with a tilt of her head she looked

from behind Lennon sunglasses

stealing my very everything

with the serenade of her eyes

she walked an invisible runaway

of what ifs, and never returns

out of the doors I had come in

disappearing was her only goodbye

before she left me alone to contemplate

the lives with her I’d never lead

Oh my... all the what ifs that play out in this scene and life. I guess those are what make for the best stories though! 😅 Congrats on Top Story Will!

As invisible as the invisible writer. This is so nostalgic, hoping for...maybes - hello again.

That “lives I’d never lead” line lingers—it’s like she became less a person and more a parallel universe you brushed against for a heartbeat. ✨
