Deep in the forest dark

gone where the green was left to rot

whispered words of doubt

seep from shadows cast out

_

Spores grow from where leaves once fell,

choking out dreams in a broken shell,

warning all who trespass there

of the mind in disrepair

_

So leave now down the path

and look not back at the aftermath

of a girl who burned from within;

a hate so potent it broke the skin,

and the rot, old and overgrown

that hid her throne.

_

This is the second poem in RE: SURGENCE, a poetry collection by Amanda Starks that shares what it's like to have and fight against mental illness in a free-form, lyrical prose.

Be aware that topics and themes may include suicide, self-harm, and isolation.
