Lonely Hours
Sometimes people strike us down without warning.
the words fail me when our eyes meet
across a distance that should be slim,
but it feels like a grand leap that may
just leave me with a bruised back
but when you look away, smiling,
I know the cause and effect
as if it’s logic or common sense
because she’s locked in your gaze
she’s sunshine to your shadow,
and your gaze melts when she talks
you’re so mesmerized, not caring
who sees you when or where
I look away, as if my eyes burned
just to see such open affection
which has never been directed
in the vicinity of my person
you’re just a stranger I saw,
a person who sparked curiosity
for my longing heartbeat,
but there’s still a sting
my reflection stares up at me
from the gold pool of my drink
and I see what you might have—
I’m so glad you never looked my way
