Little annual

meant to bloom for a season

one of so very many planted

just a number in a huge greenhouse

did anyone smile and admire you

while you were growing up

to fulfill

your purpose for a brief season

how long did you wait

for someone to see you

on the shelf next to so very many

grown for that same season

you caught someone's eye

and became my gift

you were beautiful in bloom

I smiled and admired you

blossoms came and went

still you remained strong

I almost let you wither away

but my tears saturated your soil

keeping you watered

in the seasons of desert

and I still smile when I see you

seasons have come and gone

and yet you still remain

steadfast

resilient

constant

abiding

continuing

lasting

far beyond the season that you were

labeled for, planted for, grown for

did I cry you into not dying

or did God give me grace

and keep you where I could see

your longevity

your perseverance

your tenacity

your refusal to conform

to your label

to a projected lifespan

little Kalanchoe

you are a symbol of

not giving up

not shrinking to fit expectations

blooming where we are

little miracles that often go un-noticed

enduring for each season

not setting limits for growth

little Kalanchoe

by nurturing you

I have nurtured myself

my falling tears

watered the garden of you

and you have nurtured me

your garden caught

my falling tears

and created flowers

what was a season

has become

home for

your indomitable spirit

is alive and blooming

in the garden of my heart

little Kalanchoe.

The gentleness of your voice carries real strength. What begins as a small ordinary plant becomes a living symbol of grace and endurance.

I like ode to plants. I had one with magenta blooms.

I especially like this line, "your indomitable spirit."
