Little Boy Blue
One day all the blue will have melted away and I'll no longer be the one holding open the door.
Little boy blue
With eyes so full of tears —
he will sweep you in and tell you his childhood fears.
And for a time, you will want to comfort him, console him, take away the pain you didn’t cause—
Never taking a moment to pause.
To think to yourself “it’s not my trauma to fix”—
but your heart is so big, you have so much willingness to give.
With each caress, each token of forgiveness, each embrace —
he will never be fulfilled, it’s a constant chase.
Little boy blue
With the timed affection and delicately picked words—
Why wouldn’t you think you’re the only one in his world?
You reach and you reach, and yet you can never quite grasp—
his contentment or fulfill the task.
The task of being enough
for little boy blue.
For you were once the girl he dreamt of,
or so he said—
Now you are a woman with no clue
how to be you, again.
Little boy blue
is no longer a boy but a man—
who can’t even stand.
Without knocking you down a peg—
the fears you wanted to treat have now latched on,
and filled your mind with dread.
He replaces women like he does his car—
he shuns you out but never wants you too far.
Little boy’s blue has now seeped into you.
With every touch, with every taste—
“I’m not happy” he said and was gone without a trace.
“But I loved little boy blue” to your therapist you say—
He gaslit, he lied, he cheated, he made me cry…
But I still found a reason to stay.
I’ll never know if little boy blue
ever found what he was looking for—
but one day all the blue will have melted away
and I’ll no longer be the one holding open the door.
