Being in love is like allowing yourself to be read like a book
To be vulnerable
To open your pages
Allow someone to look beyond the cover
And into the contents
To find what kind of comments have been left by past readers
To not just see and judge the synopsis
But to find out the real story
And to know what happens in the end
To highlight and book mark
To dog tag their favorite parts
To insert themselves and interact.
Opening that cover can be like
releasing a heavy weight
Finally opened, but comfortable.
Your fingers aren't a violation
or an intrusive invader.
It's a comforting caress.
Removing the dust from never opening up
But feeling finally secure that this reader
will not judge
will read through the lines
and see you
for what you really are
rather than making a decision
based off of the ratty spine
and worn pages.
They'll see the imperfections but understand
that this is a book that has gone through readers
that never thought to take care of it.
To only pick it up when they needed entertainment,
entertainment that never really held their attention anyway
because they couldn't care to care.
But this time it's different.
A reader with eyes that are looking to read.
A mind that wants to know and understand.
A mind that will look over every word carefully
and read and reread.
A pair of eyes that will finally put this book
at peace.

A very accurate and beautifully written comparison. I enjoyed this one immensely!
Beautifully constructed piece, Belle. Loved it!
I relished in your comparisons; my fear has not getting passed the table of contents, lol. Fabulous writing Belle!
"that this is a book that has gone through readers that never thought to take care of it. To only pick it up when they needed entertainment, entertainment that never really held their attention anyway because they couldn't care to care." These lines hit me so hard because they were extremely relatable 🥺 Loved your poem!
This gave me the realization that no two people will "see" any book in the exact same way. Each reader puts themselves into the cast of characters and the story becomes theirs giving individual meanings. I think that is why I love seeing comments on my work...
Such a great metaphor, wonderfully expressed
Great work Belle, stunning visuals!
Dear Belle, I just finished reading "Like a Book," and I wanted to express how deeply moved I was by your piece. Your metaphor of love as a book, where vulnerability and the true essence of one’s story are unveiled, is beautifully crafted and resonant. The imagery of a reader who cherishes and understands the worn pages, highlighting the value in imperfections, truly touched me. Thank you for sharing such an intimate and thoughtful poem. Warm regards, Dr. Jay
HUH! So, that's where the phrase, My Heart is like an open book comes from. Love it.
