If life were a lazy summer picnic
What would be your dish to bring?
When you, and I, and all of our friends
Pile into Janie's rusty old T-bird,
Toss the basket and cooler in the white hot trunk
Iโll jump in your lap, laugh when
Teddy bear Jo drives blazingly fast
So the sandwiches donโt melt
I'll grab the ice chest by the swing top
And run like a lizard on the sizzling sand
We'll long to plunge into the surf
After sliding in on our knees
I might try to take a nap
Underneath the same old book
I read last time
While the rest of you set up the spread
On a blanket fluttering in
A petrichor scented breeze
The summer menu is
Mostly salads:
Fruit, potato, pasta, quinoa
Summertime is salad time
So make yourself a plate,
open up an ice-cold beer,
Prop your feet up with your mates,
Take a bite out of life
Summer at the lake with

July is National Picnic Month; itโs really summer now! The perfect time for both beaches and picnics. I am not the biggest beach-goer. I am sensitive to the light, heat, and smells at most beaches. I love visiting the lakes here in Tahoe, where I live. Unlike the ocean, which to my nose smells unpleasantly briny, mountain lake beaches smell wonderful. The smell of petrichor is constantly surrounding them.
I like to visit during the early morning and twilight when the light isnโt too bright to enjoy the fresh air. Lake Tahoe sits in a basin and can get a good couple of hours of light before the sun is truly out during the summer. The same goes for the evening, the sun will drop below the tree/mountain line before the light fades, which allows me to spend a little time outdoors when I'm at my best.
I try to pack a light picnic snack when we take our dog to the beach so we can take time to enjoy the trip. I hope you enjoy your summer despite the negatives that are cropping up all around us, and find ways to beat the heat.
