Let’s get smoky

Fire as an end to loneliness

Let’s start a fire

Just you and I

Cuz we’re only here for a little while before we

...

Die

Not to be morbid but each minute counts

And I’d rather spend them with love than without

So!

Let’s start a fire

We shall press our embers against bone-dry tinder

And when the kindling

Sputters

And throws up smoke,

We shall breathe upon the heat,

As God breathed His own spirit upon the dusts and gave them life

So shall we sacrifice

Our own breath

To give our burning

The breath of life!

Then

We may incinerate whatever we wish

We may throw our burdens and traumas upon the blaze

Let us cremate all our walls

And we shall relish the warmth

Destruction casts such wonderful light!

I will wrap my tongue around your flames

Until my mouth sizzles

I will breathe in your incense

Until I cough and ache in the haze

Until all I know is the taste of our

Burnt Offerings

Let’s start a fire

And though the cold may close in around us

And though the dark may press in against us

We shall tend our circle with care

So huddle close,

In this circle of light

Huddle close

In this lonely warmth

Let us rebuke

These,

The long dark nights of our souls

Let's start a fire

And watch the smoke rise into the onyx skies

Let’s start a fire

And let the sparks dance over our heads

And like the sparks, rising to the stars

We two

Shall defy the very thought of despair

Author's note: Loneliness and desperation can be powerfully seductive-- if we're cold enough, we might reach out for any warmth. Love can be risky. Take care not to latch onto that which burns.

This is such a powerful metaphor for connection the fire representing both warmth and danger. I love how you weave the act of burning with the idea of purging trauma and loneliness. It's both beautiful and dangerous, just like love itself. So impactful.

You captured the way desperation and hope mix together when you need a little warmth. The fire image works so well. Great job!

  • Love is always risky, and that's a risk I never wanna take again. Nothing is worth that pain. Your poem was so beautiful. Loved it!
