They sat late at a bar that was bare
but for them
and the shot set out for each.
“I was true to my word,” he said.
“And I… to mine,” she said in turn.
At the door moon rays came in
as if to mark the time.
“I did what I was told—
did it all—to end up here,” he said.
“Yes, we both did.”
The man with the keys said, “Got
to go home, get some rest." And
with a sigh, “You, too.”
When they got to the door the moon
rays were gone.
