Just Words?

This little turn of phrase

Meaningful or not meaningful element of speech and writing

Just words

Why do they hit me like stones?

Especially those that are used in speech

These words, some pleasant and others not so much

Coming out of one’s mouth

They hit me like stones

With or without a tone

They trickle down on me

As if it’s digging for my soul

Am I just too sensitive?

Or are they just words

They hit harder than any stick or stone could ever

Just words

They leave a mark

A mark that never leaves

A mark that even time could not heal

A mark that stays with memory, that’s never meant to be gone

I wake up every dawn

Hoping that they are gone

But no, they hang on

Just words

They offend my delicate, thin-skinned self

Just words

Those that come out of one's mouth

Why can’t I erase you like I do on my paper?

You are permanent like a pen

Why do you haunt me like a ghost?

Just words

Phrases that creep up on me

Especially those that are unpleasant to hear, mainly about my characteristic

You hit me like stones,

Leaving a mark, that never fades

Just digging for my soul

Just words
