A month ago, while navigating the raw pain of a heartbreak, I stumbled upon a YouTube video that unexpectedly struck a chord. It featured an elderly woman reciting a poem with such grace and emotion that I found myself watching it over and over again. Her words felt like they were meant for me—offering comfort during a time when everything felt fragile.
Heartbreak is something we all face at some point in life. It’s one of those universal experiences that can leave you feeling lost, especially when you realize you’ve become attached to someone who wasn’t meant to stay. Letting go isn’t easy, especially when your heart is still holding on to the “what-ifs.”
Sometimes, though, healing begins with words—especially ones that resonate with your own story. Reading or hearing something that mirrors your emotions can feel like someone else finally understands what you’re going through. And even if it’s hard to act on that wisdom, it still plants a seed of strength.
“Just let them.
If they want to choose something or someone over you, LET THEM.
If they want to follow the crowd, LET THEM.
If they act like they can live without you, LET THEM.
If they walk out of your life, hold the door open, AND LET THEM.
Let them lose you.
You were never theirs to begin with—because you were always your own. So let them.”
That part hit me the hardest. It reminded me that letting go isn't weakness—it’s an act of self-respect. Reflecting on how others treated me, I started to shift my focus inward. I began to value myself more. That’s what healing does—it pulls you back into your own orbit after being lost in someone else’s.
What I loved most about this poem is how it begins with self-realization and slowly shifts into empowerment. It acknowledges the pain but doesn’t end there. After heartbreak, we change. We learn. We grow new fears and set stronger boundaries. We protect our hearts more carefully—not out of bitterness, but out of wisdom.
“Let them show you who they truly are—not just tell you.
Let them prove they’re worthy of your time.
Let them take the steps needed to be in your life.
Let them earn your forgiveness.”
These lines felt like a gentle nudge—an invitation to raise our standards. Not everyone who enters our lives deserves a permanent place in it. And not everyone will love us the way we wish to be loved. But that’s okay. Because someone out there will.
We’re human. We feel deeply. We love, we lose, we hurt—and we heal. And part of healing is learning that you don’t have to chase love or beg for it. The right people will show up, stay, and love you fully—not in halves or shadows.
