Just a Boy & a Girl

I will tell you a tale...

I will tell you a tale...

it began long ago

on the first day of school when we met.

*

As young kids we had played;

just a boy and a girl

with no thought as to what we could be.

*

We would run and we'd chase

across playground cement.

He was always the fastest boy there.

*

But one day at the slide ,

a once innocent look,

it was suddenly so much more bright.

*

Slowly past went the years

and our textbooks got big,

and our chasing was done in our cars.

*

We were awkward and shy

around everyone else

but together we didn't much care.

*

And soon neighborhood fun

turned to college, then jobs,

and our friendship was never the same.

*

All the times we had known

were just memories then,

and I missed my old friend more than most.

*

But he called me one day

to the place that we'd spent

many long summer days in the shade.

*

My old friend was now grown

and a man he'd become;

an odd feeling I felt in my heart.

*

And we sat under oak

by the dock at the lake;

I was nervous and didn't know why.

*

Slowly taking my hands,

he was shaking, like me,

he had said those three words, "I love you."

*

He had whispered them soft

but his eyes told of more

and I swam to the depths of his soul.

*

As young kids we had played,

just a boy and a girl,

with no thought as to what we would be.

*

And so this is my tale...

it began long ago ,

but our lives have just started to grow.

Awww so beautiful. I love how you brought up the simple memories of playing together, and incorporated the different stages of life. Such a lovely poem.

  • Beautiful Krysha. I love this recount of simple and pure love. This poem filled my heart with a good feeling.

That was really sweet! Your poem feels like a gentle walk-through time, from childhood innocence to grown-up love. I love how it circles back to the beginning, like life completing a beautiful loop.
