Jack & The Hill

Where Do We Go From Here?

By Vagabond WritesPublished 4 months ago โ€ข 2 min read

It's all downhill from here...

I wonder if this is how Jack felt when he went up to fetch that pail of water.

It was a slippery slope on Twin Peaks.

Somehow the country he loved became the backdrop for a murder mystery.

Who killed Democracy?

You did

Your vote

Her body

Your choice

Immaculate conception even if it's forced

Her name was Jill, not Mary.

She was a child, not a saint.

She went up that hill unmarried and unholy, and never came down.

She died in childbirth, but through Hail Mary prayers, and Hail Mary procedures the child survived.

They named him Jack, cuz shit they didn't know jack shit about him, or this dead girl, or all that had went wrong to bring a beautiful baby boy into this world, but shit, I'd like to think he was named after his uncle.

His name was Jack.

He went up that hill and never came down.

When he reached the summit the world inverted itself, twist turned around.

Up was down, wrong was right, the right was wrong, the left was right, and it all started at peaceful protests over a woman's rights.

But we voted for this right?

To have rights rewritten and taken away

Day by day

Not just for women, for everyone especially the Blacks, Latinos, and the gays

But let's not forget Jack

Our big strong heteronormative white man.

He votes how he wants, you vote how you can.

He voted for what he thought he wanted, but the loss of his sister, neighbors, and coworkers weren't part of the plan.

He just wanted lower egg prices, what went wrong he doesn't really understand.

Jack went up that hill thinking himself a warrior and a viking until he went to a protest, spoke to the people, educated himself and learned there was no culture war and he had no enemies.

That he and we all just need more empathy.

Be more willing to fetch a pail of water for the downtrodden and thirsty.

Jack went up that hill and never came down.

You followed in his footsteps, climbed to the top, saw the way the world bends and twists every which way round.

You stand on the precipice of change, what will you do now?
