Miigwech Giizis or Thank you, Moon

Twenty thirteen and not too soon

My moon time ended

When we unfriended

Intended

It was June

~

Thirty-nine years from the start

My start was ten years old - my part

We could miss schooltime

Not allowed to climb

At moon time

Take to heart

~

Then we had our own dishes

I would fill my heart with wishes

Didn't want to miss

I did like recess

Me and sis

No kisses

~

No dating until fifteen years

That notice came with a few tears

Brothers teased us when

We would stay home then

They cook again

To our cheers

~

Miigwech Giizis or Thank you, Moon

All that you have done for me. Soon

some will have affect

I am a suspect

The moon has effect

When it's full, I swoon

You always teach me something, Denise whether it is an insight into your culture or, in this case, a new form of poetry. Well written, lovely sentiment. Best of luck.

I love how you’ve woven cultural tradition, personal memory, and gratitude together so naturally here.

The moon has effect When it's full, I swoon : the last two line carry some weight. Some people or children act out of the ordinary during a full moon

  • Oooo, that's a new form of poetry for me! So cool. Loved your poem!
