It Doesn't Have to Be That Way

Abandoned buildings surround us all
Through their broken windows shelter calls
Dumpster fires warm the night
Stolen food is shared to ease hunger's fight
But, it doesn't have to be that way
God provides enough, you see,
For every soul, for you and me.
Shelter, love, and bread to spare,
But we forget and leave it there.
We have fields of wheat in golden waves,
Yet hunger fills too many graves.
Hearts grow cold where love should stay,
We hoard the light, then curse the day.
It’s not the earth that’s running dry,
It’s the greed of man that shuts the mind
But it doesn't have to be that way
God provides enough, you see,
For every soul, for you and me.
Shelter, love, and bread to spare,
But we forget, and leave it there
What if we opened every door,
Used what we had to heal the poor?
With loving hands of plenty, not fists of strife,
We could build the world, could change a life.
It could be that way
God provides enough, you see,
For every soul, for you and me.
Shelter, love, and bread to spare,
But we forget, and leave it there
We forget and leave it there
