Island and the Deep

A Poem of Grace

For my beloved.

In storm waves

you're Island

Sands of change

Soft under my feet

Warm beneath my skin

Solid mountain

Sanctuary,

Place of quiet rest

Warmth in stormy quest

Shelter from the storm

Home.

I'm not alone.

But I'm floating

Waves over my head

Cold inside this depth

In the distance

You are calling

Come on home, then

But I'm drowning,

Downward, sinking

Breathe in water

It's my own choice

Don't know how to love

Don't know how to swim

To the safety of

Long forgotten dream

Afraid to be warm

Lest you change your mind

Don't deserve the Sun

When I ran from home.

Lungs on fire

Where's the surface?

Where's the ocean floor?

What is up?

What is down?

It's so quiet here as I drown

Weightless

Darkness

Death is

Calling

Goodbye

Island.

Lifted

Pulled out

Is this sand?

Coughing,

Breathing

Heart still beating

Warmth and sunshine

Don't deserve light

But your lips are

Breathing new life.

Island! Love me.

I will love back.

Take me, deeply

I won't go back

Make love to my

Heart, to my mind

Maybe someday

I'll be deserving

Until then,

Please don't stop loving

Gracious Island

Lovely Island

Darling Island

Kiss me again.

This is so raw and beautifully emotional. It captures the struggle of feeling unworthy of love while longing for it so deeply. The imagery of the storm, the waves, and the island creates such a powerful contrast between fear and safety, despair and hope. It’s heartbreaking yet hopeful—such a touching piece!
