Orange Painting by Sarah Lynch
Anthony Burgess came to America on a green card.
We met after we both got robbed during a riot.
We were sleeping on the sidewalk because
we couldn't get into the homeless shelter without identification.
When we asked if we could volunteer
at one of the local thrift stores,
they told us we could
if we agreed to a background check.
So I just decided to call the air conditioner Jesus.
