As you gaze into the mirror, you meet the eyes of someone staring back at you.
Not a stranger but yourself.
You know the eyes matching yours, the puzzled face in the glass.
But, it doesn't feel right, you feel wrong, out of place.
In a world that you've come to learn you don't belong, it becomes hard to find yourself.
Even in your own reflection.
The eyes, lips, skin, nose.
You know these things so well, but in the moment you see them as others do.
Different.
Every feature you have to see makes you mad. You know they don't belong.
They don't belong anywhere, not on your face, not on anyone's face.
Why were you cursed to bear the burden of your body?
What could you have possibly done to be the target of this hell?
To be outcasted by your own mind.
You're not right.
But why not?
For what reason can you not unglue your eyes from every imperfection, why are they imperfect?
Why are you imperfect?
You remember one hundred and one different magazine covers, commercials, ads, videos, articles, about acceptance and love.
So why can't you accept yourself for who you are?
Why have these thoughts slithered into your head like a parasite, eating away at any sliver of home you feel you have?
What do you have to do to finally feel as if you belong?
Your family and those who call themselves your friends claim to be your people but you still feel different.
You are different.
You know you're not like them.
But you can't find how.
And you don't know why.
You break your eyes away from the mirror.
Away from the horrifying realization that you don't even have a place in your own mind anymore.
You lay down, and pick up your phone.
A video plays, it tells you all about the wonders of being yourself.
Not being afraid to express every inch of your personality and feelings.
You like it, and comment in agreement.
Thinking that maybe.
Just, maybe.
You'll finally trick yourself into believing you're not wrong.
