In the Shadow of Borders

A Refugee’s Tale

I crossed the night with fear in my eyes,

The stars were the only witnesses to my pain,

Each step heavy with the weight of lost lives,

Dreaming of a place where hope can reign,

My feet bled on this path of despair,

Guided by whispers of a safer tomorrow,

The barbed wire, a cruel snare,

Caught between hope and sorrow,

They took everything, but left me with dreams,

Dreams that were shattered by harsh reality,

My heart ached for the silence of screams,

Silence that echoed in the border's brutality,

We ran through forests, hid in shadows deep,

Each rustle of leaves a potential threat,

Nightmares and fears that never sleep,

Yet we pressed on, souls not ready to forget,

The children cried in the darkness so vast,

Innocence lost in the struggle to survive,

We held them close, praying for peace at last,

Praying for a chance to simply thrive,

The guards, they yelled, their voices like knives,

Cutting through our fragile hope with ease,

Yet we moved forward, for we sought new lives,

In a land where we could breathe in peace,

We came to your borders, seeking refuge,

Faces weathered, hearts full of plea,

Will you see our humanity and not the deluge,

Of our pasts, our pain, our desperate journey?

For in your eyes, we seek compassion’s light,

A beacon to guide us through the darkest night.

Wow. I was going to say this line was my favorite: Each step heavy with the weight of lost lives, but as I kept reading the next one became my favorite and the next. Great Great poem. ✨
