In A Different World

But it’s not so

Sound bites bypass the ears of humanity,

Tears flow heavily within the silence,

Thoughts stream into conscious profanity,

Misunderstood — an epitome of excuses,

Language barriers fall upon the deafness.

******

Sound waves flow on noiseless streams,

Light-hearted banter a forgotten art,

Whispers ignored, causing the destruction of dreams,

A voice of rejection bounces back,

Leaving the speaker in a tomb of noise.

******

Thoughts frantic but left unspoken,

Words wasted — what’s the point?

They mostly travel unheard, a mere token,

Meanings lost or better still, totally ignored,

Adapting solitude as a response.

******

Actions scream volumes; heard from afar,

Sending the promises to the void,

Until there’s no choice but to lock that door that once stood ajar,

Hiding internally while building inner strength,

To become one’s own saviour.

******

On those days the rain follows suit,

Resilience will refuse to surrender,

To the deafened ears, a good quick boot,

Replacing the smile that faded on ignorance,

To master the world of silence.

******

The true test of time was forgotten,

Some things remain a staple of life,

Usually those of destitute so rotten,

That trauma follows within its path,

Leaving scars and battle wounds that fester forever.

******

A wish it could be different, a little less obscure,

A heart repaired; brought back to life,

A dream that deafness had found a cure,

Listening became a world wide art,

And broken hearts mending became the societal norm.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
