I Wish To Swim

But the lifeguard won't let me.

I Wish To Swim
Photo by Sean Oulashin on Unsplash

I fear one touch may bring me back.

Not to life,

but to death.

A temporary body

for a temporary void

so real yet imaginary—

do you want me or not?

I want to feel wanted,

but with you I feel discarded

until that time your fingertips

trace the outlines

of my most vulnerable parts.

You are an ocean

with strict rules:

only step on the shore.

I am denied your depths

always needing more.

Is this the intention?

Is it a game to you?

Or are you simply

as scared as I am

that this could be something

more beautiful than either of us deserve?
