I Told Myself I'd Never Tolerate This

A Poem

I Told Myself I'd Never Tolerate This

When you say "I love you"

There's sorrow in "I love you too"

There's disgust in what I love you through

Mendacious things I've watched you do

Then lazily justify

When I say "I love you"

I rarely say it first

Through all the veiled threats and worse

Through banging walls and slamming doors

How could I?

When you say "I love you"

I hate the resignation

I linger on in my reply

That I often wish was just a lie

A thing we do just to get by

And pressed against you question why

"I love you too"

sad poetry
