I think therefore

I am a thinker

I think therefore I am

A thinker

I drink therefore I am

A drinker

I write therefore I am

A writer

Get over it

O ~ 0 ~ o ~

This little verse addresses the identity crisis I suspect many writers suffer. Am I a writer or should I tell people about my day job when they ask "So... what do you do'? I am pretty certain that famous authors do not face such a dilemma.

Is the last line superfluous and should I ditch it? I am not sure and would appreciate any views.

O ~ 0 ~ o ~

Thanks for reading

You are exactly right: anyone who aspires to write well finds all sorts of reasons for anxious doubt and self-loathing in every syllable. Paradoxically, I think a lack of smug confidence is the first sign that a writer ought to persevere (at least, I hope that is the case, or I'm doomed).

Leave and it is the life of a writer and thinker. I think, therefore, I write. Great job.

Share our avocation when asked what we do, rather than occupation? That is an interesting thought. And are we the ones who need to get over not thinking of ourselves as writers when we are? If so, keep the final line. Though a little additional hint at the lines intention within the poem might help the reader understand. Though short, this is thought provoking, Ray. How we see ourselves and communicate that to others matters!

It’s perfect, last line and all. I love the seemingly simple complexity of this verse!

Have you been questioned about this: should you see yourself as a writer? I'm intrigued.

  • But get over what? Sorry for being slow again 😅😅
