I Think of You and Remember

In memory of a bad breakup which I can now look back on and smile

I think of you and remember,

the summer when all we had was hope and each other

the melody of our shared breaths

how I tasted lyrics when we kissed

the way your touch left fingerprints on my soul.

I think of you and remember,

hustlin' by day and groovin' by night

putting our two nickels together to make a dime

putting our minds together to make a rhyme

trying to save our people

with rap bars and poetic verses

spittin' higher consciousness over guitar riffs and tight beats.

You became Horus in my eyes

and when the world tried to crucify you,

I was ready to be your Aset-

fly down on wings of love and save you

with the power of my divine womanhood.

I think of you and remember,

when it all started to come undone

one day I realized that I was pretending

that you loved me back

I was making love, you were having sex

I could dream of you with my eyes open,

but got only a passing glance in return.

'Move like the wind' was your motto,

never let anyone tie you down

stay two steps ahead of commitment,

keep your options open just in case

You never said this to me of course

It was what you didn't say that echoed the loudest

You were afraid of someone coming between you and the music

but I never asked you to make a choice

and how could you expect to start a revolution chorus

with only your voice?

I held on for as long as I could

thinking that I'd rather have part of you than not at all

but a part couldn't make me whole

and pieces just lets you know something is broken.

There will never be enough bars or verses, hooks or beats

to describe what it took for me to walk away

I cried tears like the Nile overflowing its banks,

as if Osiris had come back to life

and was carrying my heart to the underworld.

I fell apart every night

and put myself back together every day

I replayed memories, looking for clues

wondering how I heard music where you heard silence

how I felt love where you felt lust

how I saw a future where you saw a moment.

I think of you and I will always remember,

the summer when all we had was hope and each other

the melody of our shared breaths,

how I tasted lyrics when we kissed

the way your touch left fingerprints on my soul.

I think of you and remember,

even as I let go, I remember

even as I let go, I hold on...

I think of you and remember.
