I Sold My Soul To The Sea

A sad song

I Sold My Soul to the River

Well, I sold my soul to the river.

I was flying over the sea.

You sold my soul to the river,

so that I could live in eternity.

Fishes they swam,

swam above and below me.

Everyone tried to deliver and disown me.

Now I only know,

I sold my soul to the river,

and my body died alone without me.

The reeds, they whispered in riddles,

the wind sang sharp in my throat,

I wore the hush like a shroud,

and the current took my notes.

No priest, no prayer, no pardon,

just a hush where I used to be,

and the river rolled on in silence,

still holding the shape of me.

I called to the gulls in sorrow,

They flew by with nothing to say,

my voice went thin as the morning,

then the sky just turned away.

The driftwood knew my secrets,

it tapped them along the shore,

each thud a word unspoken,

each echo a closing door.

I saw the bones of sailors

dancing beneath

down beneath the tide,

grinning with hollow laughter

in the place where names have died.

The stars refused to watch me,

the moon turned out her light,

so I floated the deep in silence,

neither wrong nor right.

Now I live in the hush

A hush between heartbeats,

where the water forgets to breathe,

a ghost with no god to reckon with.

It’s a truth yeh,

the tides still grieve.

I sold my soul to the river,

and the river never forgave.

I rise in the steam of morning

and sink when the world behaves.

Then the time came to drown my sorrows,

no grace, no hope, and no flight,

I bowed to the devil’s whisper

and I burned in the hot firelight.
