I'm Still Here
A Poem for the Earth, for the Unfiltered Challenge
Prologue
It's still not to late to consider the environment's needs. Listen to the Earth's voice.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
I have been here longer than the sound of your footstepsβ
Before your hands jabbed my skin,
Before you decided you owned me.
I filled your lungs with airβ
But you fill mine with dense smoke.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
You forget,I recall everythingβ
The rivers that were once tranquil, clear,
The trees that once whispered,
The horizon that used to stretch endless,
Before you yanked the stars and threw them into your machines.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
I wait patiently.
I have waited as you just grab, and grab,
And grab.
The iceberg drips, faster each yearβ
Do you hear it?
Or are you too busy drowning out its faint rhythm?
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
You build tall towers on my soil,
They go up higher, higher,
Theyβre your escape from whatβs coming.
But I am everywhere.
I am in the pollution of your citiesβ
In the water that will no longer runβ
In the oppressive heat on your skin
The warning you wonβt heed.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
I quiver sometimesβ
Itβs the pain.
Your gift to me.
You call it a disaster.
I call it a reminder.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
Iβve always changed,moved,
Swallowed entire lifetimes
Given birth to new ones.
But youβyou shove me too farβ
Even tall mountains vanish under your touch,
A victim of your unsatiated hunger
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
Still, I live.
Even as you burn me,
Carve me,
Grope me
Forget me.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
See the tall grass beside your roads,
The wildflowers that peek underneath their cracksβ
Iβm still here,
Beneath your feet,
below your ignorance.
But you cannot live without me,
And IβI will live long after youβre gone.
I am forgiving,
But not forever.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
So listen, while you still canβ
Thereβs time,
Not muchβ
But enough.
Please remember
That I am not your toy.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
I want to breathe with you once more,
Feel your hands plant new trees, not scars,
Hear your laughter in the air,
Not your loud sobs.
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
When I am gone.
Now, I am still here
I am still here.
I am still here.
But..
Where are you?
Where are you?
Where are you?
ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
I will be here, when you answer me.
