When going out into the public to speak

We were getting ready

to talk to a hundred

My friend called to say

she was ready, but had some dread

~

I'm putting warpaint on!

She said, what does that mean

It feels as though I'm going

to war - I need to be seen!

~

The topic is trauma

There will be those who do

not agree and those who

will feel better with my face on too.

~

I have used this trick before

Dress for success they say

You will get more attention

With a little war paint, okay?

~

Trauma kills so many

With alcohol and drugs

With depression and suicide

I will wear my makeup and give hugs!

I love how you took something as everyday as putting on makeup and transformed it into a symbol of courage and solidarity.

What a great introduction to one of your public speaking functions this would be to use.
