I Live In A Sunburnt Country

And I live here with pride

I live in a sunburnt country,

One that the politicians are trying to divide,

Change the date, cancel the celebrations,

Take away our pride.

**

I live in a sunburnt country,

Where I was born and I’ll eventually die,

I’ve never left its shore’s,

That certainly makes me Australian in my eye.

**

I live in a sunburnt country,

And to me this country is the best,

I’d not choose to live in any other,

Than the one that nursed me at her breast.

**

I live in a sunburnt country,

She’s harsh and attests to her children’s strength,

But she’s glorious with her natural beauty on display,

And her inhabitants live on her wavelength.

**

I live in a sunburnt country,

A land of multi-culture, family, friends,

Where we celebrate her once a year,

A day of companionship and laughter, a stress free cleanse.

**

I live in a sunburnt country,

I wear my heart and love for her upon my sleeve,

She welcomes one, she welcomes all,

But please, if you’d no longer wish to celebrate, then maybe it’s time you leave!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
