he left me roses
he bought me jewelry
he spoke of vacations,
dates, all that tomfoolery.
as if that made up for
cheating on me
with my maid of honour
as if the very same things he offered me
he didn't bestow upon her
as hush gifts, ego boosters
letting her feel as if she's above me
and when i left, he said,
"i didn't want to hurt you"
and i responded,
"maybe not,
but you didn't want to love me."
