I breathe in a sigh and an eighth
Of air no longer welcome in their lungs.
The declarations of the state of the past
'These people are the people who will suffer for our fun.'
Dividing and conquering
The pseudo-science wins
I would have thought just briefly
That someone would have heard the screams;
Noticed the sin of what destroying an invisible vermin would bring.
Did they see it? Can ignorance be bliss?
But still, they refuse and resist;
"Your Honour, my client Pleads the Fifth."
In a new generation we see steps of reconciliation;
Memorials and parades help us to deep-dive.
But testing for shallows is unknown and so we fall into the black netted divides
Of the horrors we shake our heads at
Again and again.
Maybe we might weep a little,
While the rifles and A-Bombs are let fly.
Maybe we share a toast to the Grand-Uncles and Nurses who helped on D-Day.
It's the inevitability that seeks corrosion, and the sweetness of nationwide hope
That will allow us to pass by the artillery stations and news reporters
Hidden in plain sight.
The conquest for democratic salvation is achieved by only the destruction of any other lesser nation.
Hidden in plain, plain sight.
Hidden in plain, plain sight.
Step into the blinding lights, and select by touch and feel
No sense of what we already knew,
Because the stench of white paint is haunting
Graffitied handshakes and contracts passed by word of mouth
Some ten times eight years ago, remember that time?
While we think deep into our tired eyes;
It's such an awfully plain sight.

History is never forgotten, yet it repeats. π You are an amazing writer, Ruby! Like, DAMN! π€― This is so good. Your poetry anthology can't come out soon enough (and you have to let me know when it does come out; I'll take eight copies).
