I Am No Hero
A Folk Song For Now
Heroes come with swords and stone
To fight battles they take as their own.
I am no hero.

Heroes inspire others to take up the fight.
To see the urgency in another's plight.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes sleep well knowing the battle is won.
The sleep of the just at the setting of the sun.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes plunge forward with a strong battle cry.
Their energy sustained and with conviction fortify.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes are needed, though candidates are few.
Championing justice: maybe that's you?
I am no hero.
~
Heroes are chronicled, their stories are told.
Scribes and singers ensure memory never grows cold.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes win battles, again and again.
I write my stories, content with a pen.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes are lauded with pomp and parade.
I'll speak the truth even though I'm afraid.
I am no hero.
~
Heroes, like battles, may come and go.
They surface when needed, to keep hope aglow.
We can be heroes.

Initially when I read the title, I wanted to say "with all due respect, Judey, my friend, stop talking shite! you are a hero in your own way! Then I read your emotionally fraught piece and found it very relatable! Still think you are a hero, tho!
