”I want to write like you”
An upturned face, young and small
Determined dreamer, seeing an idol
I had that dream, once, too.
Once upon a time, I clung to a hope
Through struggle and doubt and failing,
To tiny gains, writing is no smooth sailing,
They see my success: in a storm, a liferope
They don't see the hard parts, and I won't tell them yet
Let them dream on for now, see if it's a phase
In the Labyrinth of publishing, only one wins the maze
Success is elusive, far from a sure bet.
For now, they have an idol, someone they want to be
A candleflame of ambition, flickering and small
(But properly nurtured, one day it will blaze tall)
It's still hard to believe that their ideal is me.
