Humble

Spoken Word

By Poetress Alyssa MichellePublished 5 years ago 1 min read

They always mistake humble for weak

How you should always turn the other cheek

But they're unaware of how badly

You've wanted to give them

A taste of their own medicine

They say treat them how you want to be treated

But it should really be treat them

How they treat you shouldn't it?

But I continue to

Stay humble

Stay quiet

Be thankful

Keep trying

Push

Push

Push

But you cannot push for respect

While others remain emotionally stagnant

Move out of the way of the mountains

They've placed in front of you

Masked as words

That make you question your own worth

Remain humble

Surrounded by egos

That replace the hollow centers of souls

With arrogance and self-entitlement

From the outside looking in

They see someone

Who's constantly been attacked

Who always chooses the high road

As a comeback

But why? They ask

Fight back

Fight back

They'll do it again if you let them

Let?

As if humbleness gave up some part of myself

You see you give up more

By giving them what they want

And since 2 wrongs don't make a right

No one wins in the end

Humbleness

Became my best friend

When they kicked me while I was down

But they didn't notice

That was just the positional sprint

Rubber band stretched

Slingshot

Fully loaded bullets

Ready to duck and dodge

Full of velocity

Humbleness is just a state

Of what looks like stagnation

Full of reserved energy

Ready to be unleashed

Without saying but showing

Humble is the slow and steady

Quietly proud warrior

That everyone tells to toughen up

With tongues that cut sharp like knives

Why should I shrink my size

To appease your acceptance

Of who I should be?

Humbleness taught me

To speak up with the correct choice of words

Not the volume of my voice

And that silence speaks louder in the way you live

Than trying to gain acceptance

By being noticed
