Humanity’s Winter

For The Sound of First Frost Challenge

Frost crackles across the car’s window panes

Leaving spider web patterns in its wake

Cool autumn air turns crisp, freezing

Bitterly biting unprotected appendages

Blues and purples chase away orange and red

Streaking across the landscape in doom and gloom

Brightness turns muted; day turns into night

Nature falls asleep while man remains awake

But lo! Pumpkin spice is replaced with peppermint

Frights are exchanged for bright lights and delights

We fight against nature’s call to slumber

The sleepiness of the scent of pine needles

The longing for warmth deep in our bones

As a need for celebration settles in

And we ignore our senses and give in

To a deeper need for humanity
