Homes’ Haiku

A lifetime can cover many homes.

By Stephen WyattPublished 4 years ago 1 min read
Boy from Buttaba

And before anyone complains, yes, most of these are Senryu rather than Haiku.

Mt Pritchard

A memory then

More distant now, toddler has

Toy car in hallway

Tumbarumba

Shorts worn in winter

Black shoes carry boy to school

Out from petticoats

Gulgong

Cricket field steamed shins

Dog chasing fox through thistle

Cat versus mouse plague

Yamba (Dowling St)

Warm weather cold crowd.

Fishing from Dad's proud new boat

Breathing sea-change salt

Maclean

Hill climb from highschool

Shy boy emerges from shell

Fist fights and friendships

Yamba (Roselands Ave)

Awkwardness lifts in

First loves fleeting embraces

As childhood expires

Yamba (Yamba Rd)

Hitchhiking subsides

As first car bought school ends with

Beer and darts with Dad

North Ryde (DLC)

University

Learning secondary to

Muscat fed mayhem

Epping (Pennant Parade)

Post eviction range

Short-lived as friends disappoint

Moving on again

Epping (Ward St)

Joyful sharing with

Strangers shattered when replaced

By faithless Girlfriend

North Ryde (Epping Rd)

Living with women

World enlarges eyes opened

To femme Americaine

Pennant Hills

Sharing with Coptics

Long hours at pubs and riding

The chemin de fer

West Ryde

Wall paper with

Beer stained Orange shag, downstairs

Ford that can’t go forw’rd

Carlingford

Lounge sees woman nurse

Fear and malignancy where

Knot is later tied

Lilyfield / Rozelle

Work all day rising

ranks as dawn breaks on parties’ end.

Hippy lives upstairs

Umina

City escaped for

Pool parties and commute grind

The first house I owned

Buttaba

Moonbeam across lake

Reflects Granddad’s spark in boy’s

Vegemite greasepaint

performance poetry
