Homeland

A poem

Lands divided and conquered

Senseless destruction for territory

Bombs blasting homes into debris

The safe haven now a painful memory

For the person who has become a refugee

Shattered dreams and broken lives

Weary spirits and swollen feet

Small bodies asleep on the street

Lost and lonely in a foreign place

At the mercy of harsh fate’s dice

Haunted eyes looking for solace

Hearts yearning for acceptance

Unwelcome, unwanted everywhere

Assailed by hostile and judging glares

Looking for protection and mercy

Finding the strength to rebuild life anew

When everything has been taken away

The past and wounds buried deep within

A desire to belong and to live again

On humanity's homeland
