A light in the dark

I found my home in the shadows

In the dirt where I examined the paths of earth worms

And under rocks that revealed billion-legged bugs

I got tangled in the wispy webs of extroverted spiders

And buried my nose in borrowed books that told tales of sharks and snakes and dinosaurs

I found my home in the shadows

Juxtaposed against the summer sun shining over our cape cod

Where I hustled Kool-Aid and handmade friendship bracelets

I baptized my feet in the rain puddles and my tongue in the juices of ripe red tomatoes from our garden

And I danced freely, spinning dizzily in circles under the shade of the oak tree

I found my home in the shadows

In the dusky hour when the street lights come on

Hiding and seeking and disclosing my location by the reverberation of laughter

And I know I’m being discovered but I’m still not in the spotlight

I found my home in the shadows

Where only my light is required
