away from home

Outside the doors

Of an apartment on the second floor

Just a little girl

I was led away

As my mother died

Because her fair skin

Looked so little like mine

It’s been many years

Also, no time at all and

I’ve wanted to go home

But home died with her

In her eyes, her arms, her smile

In her hushed voice

On her tear-streaked cheek

I lived in that apartment

On the second floor

For long after…

A place to lay my head

To rest my worried soul

But never since that day

Have I ever had a home

heartbreak
