Holding Back the Tides of the Heart

A poem about the conundrum of the heart.

By Raymond BentumPublished about a year ago 1 min read
A lone figure stands at the edge of a vast, moonlit ocean, waves crashing at their feet.

The sea whispers in the language of longing,

Waves rising, retreating—a constant song.

Beneath the moon’s watchful silver eye,

I stand where the ocean meets the sky.

In my chest, a tempest stirs,

The tides of the heart, restless, unsure.

Love, like the ocean, vast and untamed,

A force that no boundary has ever constrained.

But fear, a quiet and cunning foe,

Builds fragile walls where love might flow.

Brick by brick, it whispers lies:

“To give is to lose, to feel is unwise.”

Yet the tides are patient, wearing away,

Each wave a promise, each ebb a delay.

They know the truth I’ve yet to embrace:

That love, held back, leaves an empty space.

What lies beyond this trembling shore?

The risk of love, the fear of more.

To plunge into depths both thrilling and vast,

To let go of fears, unshackle the past.

I breathe in the salt, the wild, the free,

And feel the tides swell inside of me.

No longer held back, I step through the spray,

Letting the heart’s ocean carry me away.

The sea whispers in the language of knowing,

Its waves no longer retreating but flowing.

With every crest, with every part,

I surrender—to the tides of the heart.
