Hints of Frost To Come

sound of first frost

A crisp dampness hangs in the air, evoking the first bite of a chilled apple as juice sputters and dribbles down one’s chin.

The earthy detritus smells rising from the ground in the brightening day make my nostrils flare. Dead beetles lie in the doorway.

Exquisite frost etchings begin to disperse, sliding down the warming windowpane, becoming drops that plop onto the concrete.

Early risers, the songbirds hop and scratch as the lightly iced dirt snaps under their feet, releasing an earthy, woody scent. Geese honk in formation, landing in a run that turns into a waddle.

Frosted grass brightens in the rising melon sun, and animal and bird tracks melt away.

Fir trees are shedding, their golden needles falling like rain onto roofs and paths. The beech trees in marcescence hold golden leaves, waiting for a blustering blast of wind to strip them away.

Other trees quietly stand as sentinels against darkening days, knowing their autumn leaves will fall. A brisk breeze offers a promise of snow in its cold vapors before a chilly rainstorm rolls in. Not yet. Soon.

i love that the coming winter is evoked in more than simply image. The sounds and smells of its approach is what returns it most forcefully to mind. Wonderful poetry, Andi!
