Here’s To You, Floppy

an ode to my floppy disk

Oh floppy disk, in plastic square you sit,

Once teeming with data, now devoid of wit.

In days of old, you were the talk of the town,

With your 1.44 MB, you’d never let us down!

*

For school reports, and half-baked verse,

You saved our bytes, for better or worse:

That pixelated game, that resume draft,

All snugly stored, on your magnetic shaft.

*

But now, dear floppy, how the times have shifted!

Your role in tech, upwardly lifted.

From storied diskette to coaster quite fine,

You bear my mug's mark with that design so divine.

*

Stacked in a pile, at the door you prop,

A sentry of nostalgia, an ancient tech stop.

For while USBs flash and the cloud does reign,

Your era of simple storage will forever remain.

*

Collectors may covet, but most simply grin,

They say, “This belongs in a museum's bin!”

To the younger ones, you’re but an artifact weird,

A "Save" icon, they think, (do I hear a snicker or jeer?)

*

But let them laugh, for we know the truth,

Of late-night saves and the vigor of youth.

Though you might be obsolete, outpaced by the new,

For a generation or two you were the loyal tech crew.

*

So here’s to you, Floppy, with humor and glee,

For once being more than the eye could see.

Now a token of past, to history you're missed,

The iconic: the classic, the 3.5-inch disk.
