Her Spirit Is Indestructible

Although her body, heart and mind are not

She’s been on this plane for some time now,

She’s lived through love, joy, heartbreak, torment and excruciating pain,

Every cell in her body has punctuated all she has survived,

Drawing her through the wringer until she thought she’d go insane.

******

Her bones scream of the years she’d suffered, stretched throughout the joy,

Shattered when she was at her weakest, and held her tight whenever she broke,

Until she grew to become a strength that now protects those old bones,

Empathetic when they creak and groan, silently taking on the adversity of which they spoke.

******

Her heart beat a steady rhythm, in time to the river of tears she has cried,

Fell to the pit of her stomach when she was crippled in despair,

Raced at the excitement of intimacy when held by the one she loved,

Broken, shattered, grieved at the monumental loss that never repaired.

******

Her soul whispered to her when she thought she couldn’t take anymore,

Warmed her thoughts until she once again stood strong,

Protected and stored her wisdom, gained from the years of suffering and pain,

And reminded her of the heights she had risen, until she landed where she belonged.

******

Her mind often acted as her nemesis, sending battles whenever she got complacent,

Stirred her nightmares until they screamed enough is enough,

Punished her for her foolishness, caressed her desires,

And consoled her pain when things got really rough.

******

Her spirit lived in a different reality, forever young and carefree,

With a youthfulness that would never age and grow old,

Spurred her on with its ‘nothing is out of this realm’ mentality,

And turned her world back into a parody of rainbow glitter and gold.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
