Time is fast approaching, just days away in fact,
Another trip around the sun, another year has past,
Your special day is one I could never forget,
This time, a year ago, was when we saw you last.
******
What will you do to celebrate?
Will you change the tradition that was always ours?
This will be our first that we’re not together, but sadly not the last,
Will you notice us missing? Will you count away the hours?
******
I’ll sit quietly for a time, and remember that monumental day,
The day I first met you when I introduced you to our world,
The newness, the tragic scare, the heartbreak,
That turned me into a woman, where once I was just a girl.
******
It’ll certainly be strange, not the outsider I’ve become,
But the one you’ve forgotten, discarded like a piece of trash,
Will you watch your phone, hoping to hear from us?
Will you regret the last few years of decisions, or fear any backlash?
******
I’ll keep my silence, I’ll not force myself on your day,
Leave you in peace, bury you deeper within my heart,
Spend the day swimming in my memories,
Before packing you away once more, locking the door as the tears depart.
******
I wish you a Happy Birthday, full of love and celebration,
I wish for you a day of laughter and not memories of regret,
I wish for you a heart full of joy, arms that hold you with love,
You may not hear from me on your day, but don’t ever think I’ll forget.
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
