Hello

For My Wife and Daughter

Hello

There is a deafening silence

Filling the void that you left behind

As they wheeled you away and told me

To get dressed.

The air catches in my lungs

And my hands grow clammy

Sitting there in your room

Waiting for her.

My overthinking mind begins to swim

Within the thoughts of everything

That could possibly go wrong

For either of you.

They come in and tell me they are ready

And usher me through the double doors

Where you are lying in wait

To start our lives.

It takes only the instant that I sit down

That they tell us they are done

And I wait bated for her first sounds

To hear her cry.

I watch them work to stitch you closed

While you grip my hand so tight

A worried smile on your breath

As she starts to scream.
