Hear Me Now

Dear Mama

By Mercedes ChavezPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

We're all damaged, we're still trying to repair what was broken

We've all fallen in our own way; you weren't the only one at fault, but you were the one who was supposed to protect us

It wasn't so much what you did, but more of what you turned a blind eye to

You claimed you didn't know what was happening, but who doesn't know what is going on under their own roof?

And when you did know, you did everything you could to excuse it

His son hurt her, and you still let them stay, for the longest time she was too scared to sleep alone

Another felt safer with our grandparents, but that was okay, she thrived and was better off there

One ran away for months, because she needed to get away, and when she finally returned... you beat her

The smallest of us at the time... we did everything we could to protect him, he didn't need to see everything we did

And I never had your attention, I spent days trying to keep them from fighting, trying to keep the little one safe, and spending years feeling like you hated me

Never feeling like you cared took a toll, I felt I could never speak up or tell you when something bad happened... So, when what happened to her, almost happened to me, I had to call on someone else to save me

So much you'll never know, so much I'll take to the grave

You exposed us to life as you knew it, so we all went through it

And we're still trying to heal our hearts from it
