Trauma Bonds
Southern thunder
tore my womb asunder,
and out came dozens
of signs and wonders…
In particular– waves of
Forgiveness like no other;
washing over lover, mother,
and out-of-body brother.
This covenant only breaks
when it hits the shore.

Fallen Angels
We all know what it’s like to lose our wings.
Such wounds keep us from reaching Higher Things.
But if I had a penny for every time you fell
trying to lift me up, I’d build a well
and send our demons into hell.
Few can know what it’s like to ascend.
But I believe, at least, we can make amends;
not by wishing for that which we toss,
but by worshiping He who gives loss.
Let the rest become moss.

The Heart
The heart is a fickle drum.
One moment she sings a lullaby;
the next she breaks glass. Her cage caves in
so the chest sheds treasures.
An empty heart echoes the most,
resonates from skin to bone to soul.
The heart does more than thrum;
she beats two into one.

Revelation
Every day together was a holy day;
whether we were playing or praying.
Some sunrises brought Heaven to Earth,
a small apocalypse at the end of our bed.
Who knew it was possible to miss ‘The End’?

Cold Plunge
Your cold tongue
was the ice bath
that woke me up
out of drunken slumber
and my heart filled with the fire
of a hundred unspoken words from years prior.
Now, all this flame-tongue can say is:
Thank you for jolting me back to my soul.
