Halloween

A Deeper look at Halloween

By John FletcherPublished 4 years ago 2 min read

Halloween

For some of us

Halloween is our favorite holiday

We plan ahead

Picking out something we want to portray

We seek to have

An escape from our normal life and routine

So we pretend

To be pretty or something from our bad dreams

We spend our time

Getting the perfect costume to look just right

Brings the response

That we are looking for in pure joy or fright

Children do it

So they can have all the candy they want

Grown-ups do it

To escape the mundaneness of life and flaunt

What if I say

Even though we celebrate it once a year

We put on mask

Everyday, so that people won’t see our fear

Fear of failure

Fear of being pretty enough, strong enough

Fear of regret

Fear of being funny enough, good enough

But the truth is

Enough is enough – you do not need a mask

So stop hiding

And come out, there is nothing you lack

Don’t let people

Make you feel any less than who you truly are

Because you are

Awesome, wonderful. And you are a true star

So when people

Try to force you to wear a mask, make it clear

And remind them

That Halloween, only comes but once a year

Behind the poem:

I wanted to write a poem about Halloween, but I wanted it to be more than just ghouls and ghost. I wanted to look at a deeper meaning of Halloween. So, I decided to write a poem about the mask that we wear throughout the year. I wanted to also write a poem that builds up people too. I like to write poetry that inspires or is romantic.

So this poem is about the mask that we wear on a daily basis, how we pretend to be what we are not, because of the fear of letting people see who we truly are. So we are surrounded by people who are not who they are. People become negative because they are not free to be who they are. I want people to know that they are awesome and great and should be proud of who they are. I want people to be free to be real.
