Grumpy Ol’ Man

A poem

He called before midnight

“Was that the taxi you requested?”

Like everyone else

Calling and waiting, waiting and crying

That so many hours have passed

Since the report, and then the line went silent

“Motorway? A Road? Country Lane?

Oh, did you leave your car running all night?

Keys locked in boot?

The mechanic will be with you

When the sun rises from behind the moon

Not earlier, as everyone is asleep

They’re at work, yet not the same one as it supposed to be

Responding rudely that I woke them up

I am at work and you should be there too

Nice and ready to attend the scene

Do not hesitate, do not stall

Take your truck and go!”

“But it won’t be until dawn!”

What a drag, what a piss

They all imitate bluntly

The grumpy ol’ man who just called

He couldn’t listen to what I had to say

To each of them

The line was bad, so what if I

Had all these high-level words prepared in my pockets

They are stressed, overwhelmed, angry

What is the use of language

What is the use of all this training

If there is solely a humanity waiting for me

Loud as a gunshot, with lightning speed

Do it now, don’t delay

As we’re all going to end up in hell anyway

There is no heaven, only dark roads

Leading us to dangerous spots

Perilous advertising

Of our end of waiting
