Gratitude For Today

A new dawn

I’m grateful for a new day, a new dawn,

As I lay on my bed swathed in sunshine,

I’m grateful for my youngest son,

Who supports me through to the end of time.

**

I’m grateful for the breeze that billows,

As it caresses my humid skin,

I’m grateful for the softness of my bed,

As I rest a few minutes before I let my day begin.

**

I’m grateful for my baby girl,

As she purrs happily by my side,

I’m grateful for the summer warmth,

Thankful it’s time for winter to hide.

**

I’m grateful for a listening ear,

One person who shows me she is always here,

I’m grateful for my heart that beats,

Even when it’s full of fear.

**

I’m grateful for my first coffee of the day,

As it scolds my lips with heavenly bliss,

I’m grateful for my son’s good morning,

And again for his goodbye kiss.

**

I’m grateful for the body that houses my soul,

For sticking in the game, even though it’s growing old,

I’m grateful for the life I’ve led,

The good, the bad, the pain all told.

**

I’m grateful for the future I hope to be granted,

Aware that I live on borrowed time,

I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned,

And all the uphill battles I climb.

**

I’m grateful for the love I’ve felt,

Even those I’ve lost in the past,

I’m grateful to those few who’ve stuck around,

Standing by me to the last.

**

I’m grateful for the words that flow,

From the ether they’ve been drawn,

I’m grateful for the conduit that they form,

Because truly I’m just their writing pawn.

**

I’m grateful for today,

Because I’ll not live it again,

I’m grateful for a life well lived,

Regardless of the traumatic pain.

**

I’m grateful for you, my avid reader,

Without you my words would be unheard,

I’m grateful for your support, generously given,

Without you, every one of my poems would be wasted words.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

To know that Thanksgiving doesn't get lost in all the Hallow-Thank-Mas of the season for you is good to know. Of course, the fact that you live in Australia might explain it, lol. Still good to know that you're able to find reason to give thanks after the kind of year you've had. Blessed Holidays to you, Colleen.
