In life, relationships are formed, whether by family or just a simple connection. We tend to get attached easily without realizing that one day we will have to say goodbye—whether it's by death, or as simple as a broken relationship. Some relationships will get broken like a vase, and we will try to mend them, but they will still leave a crack. Then suddenly, with every hit, the crack gets deeper and deeper until it can’t be fixed anymore.
Sam Fischer sang it in his song, “She got a hold on me, she got me wrapped round her finger, this city’s gonna break my heart, this city’s gonna love me then leave me alone” – This City. We have failed to realize that forever isn’t forever. One moment they're here, and the next they're gone—one after the other. After a time, all the bruises your heart is faced with cause it to shatter, and you can’t put it back together. She just sat there, weeping, with the shattered pieces of her heart in her hands.
Being born into a family, you would think you’d get forever relationships, right? Fun fact: we’re only human, and humans feel. Let’s not forget we are. Some of us weren’t able to meet our family members, but others of us created “unbreakable” bonds with them—laughing, crying, fighting, and forgiving. And still, somehow, even those relationships fall apart. Whether it’s misunderstandings, distance, pride, or pain, the people we once thought would always be there can disappear like a whisper in the wind.
But what do we do when we’re left alone? When the silence is too loud and the memories feel like echoes? We heal—slowly, painfully, but surely. The cracks may not go away, but they remind us of what we survived. We learn to carry the lessons, to hold love a little more gently, and to guard our hearts without locking them away.
In the end, maybe relationships aren’t meant to last forever in the way we hope. Maybe they’re meant to teach us, grow us, break us open so that light can get in. And maybe, just maybe, the most important relationship we’ll ever have is the one we build with ourselves—learning to pick up our own pieces, hold ourselves with grace, and love even after the breaking.
